"Campo del Sole"

Loc. Punta Navaccia

Sculpture architecture consisting of 28 sandstone columns arranged outdoors on the shores of Lake Trasimeno.

Campo del Sole is an imposing architectural ensemble, an open-air museum, a mosaic park, one of a kind, located in Punta Navaccia, a project conceived by the well-known artist Pietro Cascella with the collaboration of the sculptor Mauro Berrettini and the Swiss sculptor Cordelia von den Steinen. It is a sort of "memorial" not referring to any particular event, but which summarizes in itself the memory of the very particular historical depth of these places, to immediately expand to an opportunity for meeting and dialogue, close and distant, daily and, at the same time , historical, in the most general sense possible.

The project was carried out several times from the summer of 1985 to the autumn of 1989 and has the figure of a large spiral formed by 27 columns-sculptures that lead to a central (almost desco) table surmounted by a solar, ideal and real symbol. reference to the encounter, to familiarity, by Pietro Cascella. Table that constitutes the goal of a meditative path at first briefly linear, then wrapped in the two turns of the spiral. The authors of the columns, all made in the workshop of Giulio and Mauro Borgia di Tuoro, in the local gray sandstone known as “pietra serena”, are Italian and non-Italian sculptors, of different generations and of different research directions. Each column-sculpture measures about 4.5 meters in height with a diameter that varies between 70 and 80 cm.

The theme of the column guarantees its overall cadence of widespread verticality, which makes Campo del Sole something like a Stonehenge of our time. A monument, Campo del Sole, not to something, or to someone, but an actual monument on the possibility of dialogue; an encounter between diversity, a place of frequentation even daily, without walls or barriers, a point of reference also for landscape, in terms of solar, of remote and multiple Mediterranean resonances.
