“Sanctuary of Mongiovino” – Mongiovino

The Sanctuary of Mongiovino or of the Madonna di Mongiovino is located a short distance from Panicale (about 7 km) and just below the ancient Castle of Mongiovino. It was built in 1524 by Rocco da Vicenza to replace an older chapel which kept a miraculous image of the Madonna inside.

The sanctuary, in sandstone, has a Greek cross plan and an octagonal dome supported inside by four pillars.

Also noteworthy are the portals of the building, the work of Rocco himself, Giuliano da Verona, Bernardino da Siena and Lorenzo da Carrara.

The interior has a square plan with four L’s at the corners plus the main chapel which houses the miraculous painting.
